For history today, we were learning about the family tree - no, not ours!! Our main text book for homeschooling is the Bible, so we were using Genesis 5 and talking about the genealogy from Adam through Noah. I have read that passage probably a zillion times before, but somehow writing it out and putting dates with it - brought it alive for me!
Most scholars believe that the earth was created in 4004 BC. Since Adam was created during this time as well (we believe in a literal 6-day Creation), 4004 BC would also be Adam's "birth" year.
With this starting point in mind, and a little math we came up with the following:
Adam 4004 - 3074 BC
Seth 3874 - 2962 BC
Enosh 3769 - 2864 BC
Kenan 3679 - 2769 BC
Mahalalel 3609 - 2714 BC
Jared 3544 - 2582 BC
Enoch - 3382 - Enoch "was not" in 3017 for God took him
Methusaleh - 3317 -2348 BC
Lamech - 3130 - 2353 BC
Noah - 2948 BC
Shem, Ham, Japheth - 2448 BC
The Flood (in Noah's 600th year) - 2348 BC
Here are some cool facts we found....
1.Adam lived to long enough to know his Great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson and died just 126 years before his Great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson, Noah was born.
2. The Bible says that during Noah's 500th year, he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth -- could they have been triplets??
3.Methusaleh's name means "when he dies, judgment"
4. Methusaleh died in 2348 BC. I used to think that just meant SOMETIME after he died - whether 2 years, twenty years etc then the judgment would come...NOPE...the exact year that Methusaleh died, the Flood came.
5. Noah's name means "comfort". No surprise that he was the man chosen by God to go alone with his wife, his three sons and daughter in-laws into the ark to save them from the world-wide destruction.
I so love studying God's Word!!
